Power steering rack advice

I hope I'm in the right section .

As title says would you pass or fail this steering rack ?

Slight seepage in my oppinion is a bit of damp residue around a joint or gator etc
Which we all know around the gaitor is the evidence of a failed seal anyway



In my oppinion it is way beyond slight seepage advisory as can be seen even on subframe .
And quarter of the rack is also covered in black dirty old fluid

Also power assisted steering fluid is empty which I know is a fail on its own

I would attach a photo if I knew how

Opinions please ?

Without checking the method of inspection/fail criteria

It has to be dripping fluid as far as I'm aware to warrant an fail

That would easily be an pass and advice for me

You would have to fail for low fluid level

Looks like a Ford Focus

Makes an change from leaking union onto the pump !

There's your reason for rejection

But reading between the lines an bare minimum test standards

Id still be inclined to pass unless it was dripping fluids

yes that's what I read aswell
I would be inclined to fail this personally because it's obviously dumped all its fluid .

But it wasn't my test and I'm just looking for opinions and appreciate your input .

We know it's nackered but it would be a pass and advise all day long based on those pictures

Same, pass and advise from me - failing and failed are two separate criteria. Something is clearly on its way out there, but for the most part it is still doing it's job, which if it had failed it wouldn't..at all.

Fail it for fluid level below the minimum level required and then add fluid and check for leak, if serious leak seen advise customer and see if a fix is in order, if not advise that it would fail for a leak at retest if leaking, which obviously would have to be checked during the registered retest period.

Hi everyone thanks for your replys and can see your point .

I dont feel this can be judged the same as like a shock absorber for instants
As the rack has boots restricting the flow of fluid and to leave this sort of evidence of fluid leakage I believe the seal would have to have failed badly enough.

Also we are talking steering it's not something I would feel comfortable passing and advising .

But obviously we all have different views etc

And am really grateful for the comments
