Tested. A Vauxhall corsa vxr today

Osf mirror damaged cracked osr number plate inop  minor defect s NSF track rod end slight play advisory the first 2 ones ok which  fault could be a a serious fault could be a major fault in 2 months time

These days I do the test make my paperwork decisions, don't tick any boxes until I've started to enter test results. The system is designed to update without informing anyone, so I take every test as presented and see what data says at the time of test input. I could easily pass one vehicle and fail another for the same defects that change in the light of experience at the drop of a hat!

The mirror glass would be the same next year if not repaired same as the number plate lamp minor defect s my gripe is it should be the other way around however the track rod end will be a major defect in 6 months time and could be a safety issue on driving ability never understood that

Well it certainly could develop into a problem, but on the other hand, how many times have we advised a ball joint for slight play, only to have. it comes back for the next couple of years still not bad enough to fail?

At this present time my boss does most mots. Over the years there has always been the argument about NSF/OSF etc. Problems in years gone by were blamed on me. VOSA senior examiners once had me in the office at work because of some technical paper problem or wrong interpretation of a mot carried out. The VE asked me about NS and OS of vehicles and what it meant! I said to him really! I've grown up in the trade straight from school, served my time when the Government approved garages of the time sent us to their college training schools, and their trainers ensured we were told the differences and shown on diagrams in the training centres the differences. We were at school from 9 am to 9 pm and had these things drummed into us, yet you come along letting everyone from any background into the trade without ever serving their time and take them at their word they are right and people like me are wrong!

We had a Chevrolet recently that the boss motd and he failed a front lower ball joint to the drivers OSF but written it down as the NSF. The car left with an mot. Our mechanic (from Africa) does not speak too much english, but is a good mechanic, keeps his head down and does what the boss tells him. He changed the NSF lower arm and ball joint. A few days later the car broke down on the road. The RAC said the offside front ball joint had detached. The car was then recovered back to us. I ended up repairing the car, the boss said nothing. The solicitor (new guy) who works with us now at the moment understands who is right and who is wrong, he's seen the evidence. If we'd of had a professional governing body who also had of served their time in the real world instead of their own book world, they'd never of made many of the bad decisions they have done so over the last 20 years of so, i.e. NTTA etc that we had to fight against bringing many people from the wrong background to the mot trade. Many standards are wrong in the mot but people at the top are not the right people to make the decisions are they!

aylesburyjock I know what you are saying however a slightly damaged mirror glass and a inop number plate lamp would not put it for a safety issue a worn TRE could deteriorate rapidly and I told the customer this !!! This is the priority he were happy  another point I've seen it on the other side with Taxis used to do council tests aswell a advisory in 3 months time is a dangerous defect !!! Some of their cars got a mot and 3 Ronnie tests in a year ( when you have special needs children excluded from mainstream school in those cars on a daily basis they had to be safe )that was me

I have tried to sympathise with you but, I hate to say it, making such obviously fictional posts are not going to help you, or anyone else. You never went to school from 9am tp 9pm (though all of us often work those hours and more!) and I doubt if you have an African mechanic?
Look the simple fact is you're no longer making any sense and, believe it or not as you please, to me it's horrible to see!

I understand your concerns Peter, and there is a certain amount of-ahem- questionable material, for me it's the the constant insulting of DVSA personnel and slandering their backgrounds and qualifications to do their job.
What is correct unfortunately is that not all training companies are requiring proof that their potential testers have the time served in the trade. I don't know how widespread it is, but I have witnessed first hand several people becoming testers who have not spent 4 years servicing and repairing vehicles. He's not wrong about everything.

peter I'm not going out my way to start an argument. Clearly though based on your own reply to my post, you come across that you've not technically served your time in college. Anybody who was in the trade from the 1970s/80s knows that they completed the college courses in Motor Vehicle Technicians courses, the City and Guilds Motor vehicle Craft Studies, the North West Regional Advisory Council education certificates courses known then as NWRAC. They were completed as part of your job were the employer had to send you to college ONE DAY per WEEK, which started at 9 AM and finished at 9 PM. 

Please also DON'T imply my boss has not employed an African Mechanic, he has and he's a good bloke but difficult to understand as his langauge is not english.

I think your trying your best to find fault but can't find it so are story telling. Please stop targetting me.

Dynamo does have a point on this  back in the day you had to submit  verified qualifications city and guilds parts 1and 2 with evidence of certificates by fax  OR  equivalent as of the testers guide on what they would allow as experience in the trade to be accepted on to the course ... Once  a time if you didn't had that you had to sit the VTTA exam which had I believe a a 75 %  failure rate ! Anyone can become a TESTER NOW if you pay to be on these poxy courses and for the Record I've got city and guilds parts 1 2 and 3 I did 4 years at Burnley college I was one of Mrs Thatcher s YTS kids 😀😀

I finished at 5 p.m. At Burnley college did 4 years got city and guilds parts  381 1 2 and 3 did 4 years I was one of MRS Thatcher s  that era YTS kids

9am start & last class finished at 7pm when I did my ONC.

Different colleges must have offered different time durations! We were there until 9 PM on a Thursday night. When I did my BTEC ONC we finished at 5.00 PM. Some younger ones were on the course at the time but most of us were older ones. A good number of attendees were from VOSA at the time. I remember that management skills were not part of the VEs remit at the time as I had my level 4 IMI in management and the VEs stuck to me throughout the management modules of the ONC to get through it.

It’s not quite as simple ‘going on a course’. If you don’t have a level 3 you have to do the LVI which is a practical proficiency test to prove competence. Now, it’s is fair to say that some of the training providers leave a lot to be desired but some have lost their approved status so DVSA do address short comings in this regard (plenty of room for improvement in that regard though).

Somebody that has completed the LVI, at a reputable accreditation provider, is plenty proficient enough to conduct MOT testing.

In fact, in my experience they are often better than the long-in-the-tooth testers that haven’t moved at the same pace as the scheme.

OK, I'm happy to back off, but I was trying (perhaps clumsily) to express concern for you. But, in the trade from the 1970's/80's? I had a Saturday and evening job rebuilding motorcycle engines in 1965.
But, yes, I'll stop targetting you as that's how you see it.
But I will say that I never had City & Guilds but a letter confitming time spent "on the job" and I had to take the exam (I can't recall the name now) fpr those who had no ther qualifications. I was a bit nervous because there were people there taking it for the third time! I got 98% in half the allocated time. That is not to brag but just to show that some the ones there were really not very good!

NTTA actually. I was one of the last to take it in 2016 as a shot to nothing. When they announced it was being withdrawn I thought why not give it a go.

I stand corrected I know a few lads who failed it and never progressed in the MOT side of things mainly from the fast fit environment knew one lad at ATS who was promised he would be put on the MOT courses I said you will never become a TESTER he said why ? You have a false leg and can only drive a automatic transmission vehicle on your license that is why
